FRAMOS Imaging Systems has developed a real-time Optical Tracking System (OTS), which provides precise information on the position and orientation of objects in three-dimensional space and sets new standards in accuracy, measurement stability and usability. At the international trade fair for medical technology MEDICA, from November 16th to 19th in Dusseldorf, FRAMOS demonstrates the OTS for medical applications and presents the technology at the Medical Health IT Forum in detail.
Imaging techniques are an essential part of everyday medical life, especially in diagnostics. However, many of the established techniques (e.g. conventional ultrasound) require a high degree of experience from the physicians to interpret the displayed data correctly. Precise navigation aids for the use of medical instruments in the operating room or data fusion from different imaging modalities can significantly ease many tasks for physicians and thus contribute to simpler and more reliable diagnoses. This is made possible with the OTS technology developed by FRAMOS.
The development team led by Dr. Simon Che’Rose provides medical companies a technology by which any surgical tools and diagnostic sensor can be tracked with high precision. The examining physician can continue to use these techniques in the familiar way whilst at the same time having more extensive diagnostic data at their disposal. The OTS technology can be used in a variety of medical problems: for example, three-dimensional imaging with conventional 2D ultrasound, sensor fusion or navigation in the operating theatre. In principle, the OTS technology is applicable to all problems in which the position and orientation of objects in space have to be determined with precision.
At the Medical Health IT Forum the OTS technology developed by the FRAMOS Systems Team and its use in clinical practice is presented by M.Sc. Benjamin Busam. He explains how the system works independently of surface features and how it can be adapted to the specific medical conditions, measuring volumes and accuracy needs. Furthermore, Busam speaks in particular about the benefits of the OTS technology in comparison to conventional used methods, such as continuous measurement reliability, intuitive usability and flexible scalability for specific medical applications.
When it comes to the OTS technology, FRAMOS sees itself as a technology provider and engineering partner with the core competence in image processing, which can be transferred to a wide range of applications in conjunction with partner companies in the medical technology sector.
