ON Semiconductors Completes PYTHON CMOS Family to Address Traffic Applications and Ambitious Inspection Tasks

Four brand-new 10 / 12 / 16 and 25 megapixels image sensors complete OnSemi's successful Phyton series to accomplish imaging challenges demanding high resolution global shutter combined with low-noise, high sensitivity and high speed in a hardware scalable solution.

ON Semiconductor, driving energy efficiency innovations, has recently released 4 further high resolution CMOS image sensors in its successful PYTHON product, available at global imaging expert FRAMOS. The new Python 10000, Python 12000, Python 16000 and Python 25000 with resolutions of 10 megapixel (MP), 12 MP, 16 MP and 25 MP respectively, address the needs of demanding industrial image sensing applications requiring higher resolutions such as specific machine vision, inspection and motion monitoring tasks, as well as metrology, pick and place machines and the efficient operation of intelligent transportation systems (ITS).

Together with the previously released PYTHON 300 to 5000 this entire family of sensors can be supported from a single PCB, greatly simplifying the design of a broad range of cameras offerings. The result is a hardware scalable product family where all sensors have the same data, control and optical interface, thus allowing camera manufacturers to rapidly roll-out products with multiple resolutions, from VGA to 25 MP, with greatly minimized development effort."

ON Semiconductor's patented in-pixel CDS (ipCDS) technology enables global shutter imaging with Correlated Double Sampling (CDS) in a compact pixel size reducing noise and increasing dynamic range, resulting in CCD-like optical performance in an attractive combination of optical formats and resolutions. The resulting PYTHON pixel allows the capture of fast moving scenes without distortion by combining a read noise of 9 e- with 7.7 V/lux sensitivity and frame rates as high as 850 frames per second (VGA). The devices boast highly attractive speed and optical performance, high configuration flexibility including fast on the fly updates to sensor settings, various trigger and control options, and operational support across the -40°C to +85°C industrial temperature range. All four new sensors are available in mono, color and extended Near-Infrared variants, further expanding PYTHON's capabilities.

The sensors have on-chip programmable gain amplifiers and 10-bit A/D converters. The image's black level is either calibrated automatically or can be adjusted by adding a user programmable offset. A high level of programmability using a four wire serial peripheral interface enables the user to read out specific regions of interest. Up to 32 regions can be programmed, achieving even higher frame rates.
